Here, Abraham van Strij presents a portrait of his brother Jacob. Using sanguine, black chalk, and brown wash, Abraham captures the tones of his brother’s face, bringing his description to life. The natural expression of the subject and the breath that animates his face testify to Abraham van Strij’s sophistication in the art of portraiture.
Among the artist’s other drawn portraits, we can mention two sheets held in the Rijksmuseum: Man with a Hat (inv. RP-T-1939-21) and Man with a Fur Hat and a Pipe (inv. RP-T-1990-74). These drawings also convey a strong sense of vitality.
