Description

The drawing was likely executed after 1570, the date at which Samacchini’s art shows greater influence from Parmigianino. Among many stylistically similar sheets by the artist there are two comparable drawings in the Uffizi, Florence (a Holy Family and a Coronation of the Virgin); and a drawing of a Prophet in a Niche that was sold at Christies, New York in 2012. These drawings present the same lightness in the application of the brown wash, firm, angular contours, and chubby or square fingers. Other notable drawings by Samacchini in public collections include a drawing in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Paris) of a Mother and Child with Saints in which the artist employs similar fringes in the draperies as he does in the present drawing.
