Description
François Watteau’s eye carefully records the minor details of this elegant woman’s attire and reproduces them with remarkable precision. The model is seated, she turns her face away from the viewer, as it the garment, the lace, the amazing hat, and the ribbons that are meant to attract our eye. Using graphite with black chalk, Watteau expertly describes the transparency of the spotted veil that covers the shoulders of the model. The careful arrangement of the skirt over the chair, meant to look haphazard, shows off the fullness of the garment and gives life to what could have been just a simple costume study.
