Description
Our sheet belongs to a set of drawings executed by Carpeaux on the theme of horses. Among his drawings, the sheet Horse Study from the École des Beaux-Arts as well as three other sheets from the Louvre Museum are executed in the same technique and in an equally energetic style. Carpeaux executed this series of drawings during his stay in Italy. It was the free horse races which took place every year on the Corso as well as the work of Géricault on this same subject which inspired him. This series on horse racing demonstrates the artist’s interest in life, movement and street scenes.
