Description
The present drawing is linked to the important commission of Mays by the church of Saint-Germain des Prés between 1717 and 1722. Each of these paintings was to represent an episode from the Acts of the Apostles. For this commission, Halle painted Saint Paul in Lystres and the painter Claude Verdot Saint Paul in Maltes. However, the composition of our drawing has many similarities with that of Claude Verdot’s painting. It is very likely that Halle had also sought to obtain the commission for Verdot’s painting by submitting the present drawing as a proposition.
