Description
During his stay in Paris, Schmidt drew portraits of members of the Royal Academy. Including the portraits of Maurice Quentin de la Tour and Nicolas Cochin, we can mention the one of the landscape painter Étienne Poitreau. The sitter in the present drawing is depicted with an unbuttoned jacket and shirt, possibly to emphasize his freedom of spirit. It seems probable that he is an artist. His facial traits are similar to those of the sculptor Paul Ambroise Slodtz, professor at the Academy in 1743, the year Schmidt was also a member.
