Description
In this drawing, Appian uses a very deep and velvety black to draw the birds, the shrub in the foreground and the trunks of trees in the background. He uses a grayer and drier charcoal to draw the bank, the sky and the body of water where the coal is stumped. Thereafter, Appian erases the charcoal to represent the foreground grasses, the path on the bank and the clouds in the sky. Exceptionally large, our drawing is a window open on a calm and serene nature in which the man, represented in the center of the composition, is completely dominated.
