Description

Emanuel Steiner depicted bucolic landscapes in which a rich and exuberant nature dominates the presence of humans, but with softness and harmony. In the present drawing, the warm Mediterranean light is beautifully arranged, highlighting the monumental architecture of the Domus Aurea (the former palace of Emperor Nero in ancient Rome). The ruined monument, overgrown with vegetation, symbolizes the passing of time. The snake reminds the viewer of the eternal presence of evil, even among the beautiful ruins of a grand civilization. The man who tries to chase the snake away, does so in order to preserve the purity and poetry of this idyllic countryside.
