Description
The present drawing is related to the Crucifixion painted by Stradanus in 1569 for the Galli family chapel in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. This painting is one of the artist’s most important works. Stradanus painted a second version of the painting for Giorgio Vasari in 1581, today in the Casa Vasari, Florence. Another drawing by Stradanus of this composition is in the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. It was executed in pen, brown ink, brown wash with white gouache highlights, and includes the painted decorations in the chapel surrounding Stradanus’s painting. This drawing is a preparatory work for the engraving of the composition realized by Philippe Galle and published by Theodoor Galle in 1574.
