Description

Student of Leprince and orientalist precursor, Jean-Baptiste Hilaire traveled to Asia Minor, from where he brought back studies of traditional costumes and typical landscapes. This coastal view, where a sailboat and boats approach a building, is similar to the many other views of the Bosphorus Strait captured in ink and brown wash by Hilaire. The group of Ottomans sitting and smoking, as well as the distant coast where minarets soar, are recurring motifs dear to the artist.
