Description

This unpublished drawing must be returned to Hubert Robert and classified among the youth production. It is above all one of the very first research projects undertaken for the creation of the architectural Caprice with the Pantheon and the port of Ripetta (ill. 1). This composition is undoubtedly the most important work of Robert’s early career. He painted two versions, first the painting of 1761, commissioned by the Duke of Choiseul, then the repetition in 1766 presented as a pleasure and reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
