Description
The subject of our watercolor, a refined landscape, seems at first glance very atypical in Barye’s work. However, it is part of the same attentive and sensitive exploration of the human soul undertaken by the artist in his bronzes, his paintings and his drawings: in a few glowing brushstrokes, Barye translates the emotion of an individual facing the power of nature. This landscape, exceptionally deprived of any presence, alone transcribes the subjective experience of the Romantic Sublime with, as a horizon, the feeling of the Infinite.
However, the formal treatment of our sheet – composed, with a beautiful economy of means, of delicately juxtaposed light tones – remains rare in Barye’s graphic corpus. We can, however, cite in a very comparable spirit Sketch of a landscape with a hill in the center or Vast landscape with a hill on the left.
