Sneek 1858 – 1908 Paris
Dutch painter working in the Impressionist style, Siebe Johannes Ten Cate lived his life in France. He first studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Amsterdam, then in Antwerp and Brussels before moving to Paris at the age of 22. In Paris he met Kees van Dongen and Vincent van Gogh. Ten Cate was a great traveler and went to England, Scandinavia, Switzerland, North America, and Africa where he painted city views and landscapes. He exhibited in Paris at Durand-Ruel, in Munich, Venice and Vienna, and participated in the Universal Exhibition of 1900. The Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek devoted a major retrospective to him in 2012. The Carnavalet Museum in Paris owns a large group of his paintings and pastels.
