Michel Corneille The Younger

The painter and engraver Michel Corneille II originally studied under his father and later under Charles Le Brun and Pierre Mignard. He went to Italy around 1659 after winning a prize from the Academie Royale enabling him to travel there. Upon returning to France he was received as a member of the Academie with his piece Christ Appearing to St. Peter today at the Musee de Beaux-Arts and Archeologie of Rennes. Corneille was a prolific artist and much sought after by the nobility for whom he painted numerous commissions.
