Jean-Baptiste Pater

Valenciennes 1695-1736 Paris

Jean-Baptiste Pater was a prominent French painter known for his contributions to the Rococo style. Born in Valenciennes, he became a student of Antoine Watteau, whose influence is evident in Pater's focus on light, color, and playful themes. Pater specialized in genre scenes and fêtes galantes, portraying elegant figures in lush outdoor settings, often conveying a sense of leisure and romance. He was approved at the Academy in 1725 and received in 1728 as a painter of fêtes galantes, a category that had been created eleven years earlier for his master. He gained popularity in his lifetime and produced numerous works for the aristocracy.
