Giorgio PICCHI

Rome 1555 - Urbania 1605

Born in the Marchigian town of Urbania, but raised in Rome where his parents moved c. 1565 to run a successful ceramic workshop, Girolamo Picchi spent most of his career in Marche region and in Rome. Picchi’s first teachers are not known, but the artist’s compositions show the influence of Raffaelino del Regio, Federico Zuccaro, and later in his career Federico Barocci. Picchi became a member of the Compagnia di San Luca in 1580, proof that in this year he freely exercised his activity. Among his important commissions, are the the decoration of the Gregory XIII’s lodges, the Lateran Palace, the Sistine Library in the Vatican, and the Immaculate Conception for the church of San Francesco, Urbania. Picchi also worked in Rimini and Cremona.
