Emanuel Steiner

Winterthur 1778 – 1831 Winterthur

Emanuel Steiner was a Swiss artist who specialized in the representation of landscapes around 1800. Painter, engraver, and draftsman, Emanuel Steiner first studied with Johann Rudolf Schellengerg in Winterthur, and then, from 1796 to 1798, with Anton Graf and Adrian Zingg in Dresden. He stayed in Rome from 1801 to 1803, and then in Naples where he became friends with Carl Anton Graff, the son of his former teacher. During his stay in Italy, Emanuel Steiner made many sketches in nature which later served as references for his landscapes. He traveled to Paris and London before returning to his hometown in 1804. He settled in Zürich in 1805, where he was close to the circle of the poet Salomon Gessner.
