Genoa 1627 – 1703 Genoa
Domenico Piola was the dominant painter in Genoa in the second half of the 17th century. He directed a dynamic family workshop, the “Casa Piola”, greatly in demand for decorating fresco ceilings in an illusionist style. He trained alongside his big brother Pellegro Piola and showed qualities as a draftsman. His baroque style was formed by observing the Genoese painters Valerio Castello and especially Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione from whom he retained the dramatic draperies and diagonal compositions, which precisely characterize this Assumption.
