Charles-Nicolas Cochin

Charles-Nicolas Cochin learned the art of drawing under Jean II Restout and later studied at the Royal Academy. A versatile artist, he worked from 1737 on the Menus Plaisirs du Roi representing all the celebrations of the Court. Cochin was also known as an engraver, during his career he executed numerous commissions such as the Histoire du roi par médailles and the Campagnes du roi en Flandres for the King. Cochin illustrated over 200 books during his career, solidifying his reputation in that field. He was approved at the Royal Academy in 1741. From 1749 to 1751, he accompanied the marquis de Marigny in Italy. Subsequently, the marquis took Cochin under his protection and Cochin became the Kepper of the King’s Drawings in 1752. He was named perpetual Secretary of the Académie Royale in 1755 and Knight of the order of Saint Michel in 1757.
