In the nineteenth century Charles Daubigny stands midway between the romantic artists and the impressionists. For the latter his work was extremely influential.
Coming from a family of artists, Charles Daubigny studied with his father, Edmond François Daubigny. Later, in 1831-32, he worked under the landscape painter Jacques-Raymond Bracassat. He exhibited regularly at the Salon in Paris from 1838 to 1868. Daubigny traveled throughout France and also made voyages to Italy and Switzerland in search of motifs. During his travels he worked alongside many of the important landscape painters of his day, including Theodore Rousseau and Camille Corot, to whom he was especially close.
