CAMILLO BOCCACCINO

crémone v. 1504 ‒ 1546 crémone

Camillo Boccaccino was an Italian painter of the early sixteenth century, known for his contributions to the Mannerist style. Born in Cremona, he probably studied with his father Boccaccio Boccaccino, and was influenced by the great Italian painter of northern Italy: Titian, Parmigianino, Pordenone and Giulio Romano. Throughout his career, Boccaccino depicted mythological and religious themes working on various altarpieces and frescoes for churches and private patrons. One of his notable work is the decoration of the vault of the apse of San Sigismondo in Cremona with the Christ in Glory and the Four Evangelists, that demonstrate the variety of Boccaccino’s inventions and the novelty and boldness of some of his figurative solutions. His vibrant use of color, his dynamic composition and his elongated figures inaugurated a new stylistic and decorative language in the Cremonese school of painting at this date.
